Real Love

1 06 2011

God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. I John 4:9-10

On my personal checks I added a printed message that “God is Love”.  I am not sure how many people will see it but it is my small encouragement campaign to people I may never meet. We can all use a reminder from time to time of who God is and His eternal love for us.  No matter where we find ourselves on the spectrum of faith today, God loves us. It’s a love that is unconditional and everlasting.  It is patient; it is kind; and it has provided a pathway to a personal relationship with Him through Jesus Christ. I am so thankful for God’s love for us and the opportunity to extend it to others.

And it was Very Good

31 05 2011

Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was very good!  Genesis 31:10

We may experience periods in our lives where we spend time reflecting over the things we have accomplished and evaluating our progress. Society provides a lot of measuring sticks based on their values of success, money and fame.  As people of faith, we have another set of values that is based on God’s Word.  I am not sure that God is interested in the things that we have, what we have achieved in the corporate ladder or who we know.  I believe God is more interested in our life and how we reflected love, faith and righteousness in everything we do.  I love that even our Heavenly Father – the Alpha and Omega – reviewed His work in creating the Earth.  I am asking God to show where and how I can do better in every aspect of my life.

Steadfast

31 05 2011

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right, persevering, and steadfast spirit within me.  Psalm 51:10 (Amplified)

I admire people who can run long distances.  They seem to have the right balance of focus, technique and endurance to finish their course.  A marathon runner offers important lessons for each of us trying to make it. Their success is often based on consistency in their pace, their determination and their ability to endure the journey.  My prayer today is that God would create a heart in each of us that is based on His righteousness, with the determination to persevere and the firm direction to keep moving toward His purpose for our lives.

Got Fruit?

27 05 2011

“But the fruit of the [Holy] Spirit [the work which His presence within accomplishes] is love, joy (gladness), peace, patience (an even temper, forbearance), kindness, goodness (benevolence), faithfulness, gentleness (meekness, humility), self-control (self-restraint, continence). Against such things there is no law.    Galatians 5:22 – 23  (Amplified Bible)

The Holy Spirit is such a precious gift in our lives, providing love, joy peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.  In this passage, the fruit of the Holy Spirit is described as “the work which His presence within accomplishes”.  I am still a work in progress but I am so thankful for “God’s Presence within” that I am not where I used to be. No matter where we find ourselves on the spectrum of these individual traits, the Holy Spirit is there to help us. We may need to demonstrate more love, patience, kindness, humility or more self-control.  I am praying for more of each of these blessings to be evident in every aspect of my life.  I believe if we need more fruit, as we follow His leading, the Holy Spirit is faithful to answer our prayer.

Peace in the Storm

26 05 2011

“But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!”   Matthew 8:27

One of my favorite storytellers shared an experience about living with her elderly mother during a summer thunderstorm.  It was warm summer night in Georgia and her mother had opted to sleep outside on their porch.  A loud thunderstorm began and she went to the porch to make sure that her mother had come inside.  She was surprised to see her mother still laying there.  She immediately thought, her mother must be petrified with fear and unable to move and that she must go out and help her.  As she approached her, she was shocked to hear the familiar noise of her mother’s snore, she was asleep.  Through the thunder, lightning and rain her mother was peacefully sleeping through it all.  When awakened by her frantic daughter, the mother shared with her daughter “It’s just a storm”.

Cancel the Subscription

25 05 2011

“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart.  And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.”   John  14:27  (New Living Translation)

The Lord helped me to cancel my daily worry subscription. Like the morning newspaper, it would come with a delivery of a new set of things for me to be concerned about. Scenarios of calamity in various areas of my life – work, finances, health and family would unfold in my mind. Concern would grow into worry and that would escalate to fear. Sometimes the delivery would come in the middle of the night, robbing me of both rest and a peaceful mind. When I realized that none of these story lines were based on truth or God’s word, I asked God for help. I was reminded that even though Jesus came that we may have an abundant life, the enemy comes to kill and destroy our lives with lies about who we are and our situations.

This portion of God’s Word focuses on the gift of peace for our minds and our hearts – “So don’t be troubled or afraid”.  What a precious gift, that can only come from God.  We are so blessed to be able to accept this gift and to reject the worry that may be so evasive in our lives. So even when the enemy is tempted to bring a new supply of worry to my door, I can remind him that my subscription is cancelled.

Wisdom for Today

24 05 2011

My child, listen to what I say, and treasure my commands. Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding. Cry out for insight, and ask for understanding. Search for them as you would for silver; seek them like hidden treasures. Then you will understand what it means to fear the Lord, and you will gain knowledge of God. For the Lord grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding.      Proverbs 2:1 – 6

Sometimes I am at a loss for the words to say, the next steps to take or how to respond to a situation to make it better.   I have experienced the avoidable fallout of both careless words and bad decisions.   At this time in my life, I desire to be on a steady path of walking in the center of God’s will.  I want my words and my actions to be reflective of God’s love and purpose for my life.  On certain days, we may wonder why we are here and what we should be doing.  I am so thankful that we can ask God for understanding and insight.  With a listening heart and a focused mind, God is faithful to provide wisdom for today and the days ahead.

A Perspective of Thanks

23 05 2011

“Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.”  I Thessalonians 5:17-18

There is so much to thank God for. Our lives are filled with blessings.  While reading this morning, someone is illiterate, another has not seen a computer before and yet another is facing a life of absolute poverty that we can’t imagine.  Growing up in my father’s church, the saints of God would often start testimony service by thanking God for their life, health and strength.  These are things that we often take for granted, until they are in jeopardy.  The act of breathing in and out without a thought is a blessing beyond measure.  Just ask someone with asthma or emphysema.  Keeping a point of the view that recognizes God’s faithfulness and mercy helps us to respect each blessing.

As blessed people, we are compelled to be thankful and also to honor the blessing by blessing others. We can show gratitude by demonstrating kindness, sharing our resources or simply smiling to those who need encouragement.  We can be thankful for being blessed and honoring this blessed life by being a blessing to others.

Just Keep Swimming

23 05 2011

“So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.”   Galatians 6:9  (New Living Translation)

“Finding Nemo” is one of my favorite movies. It is a story about a fictional father fish whose worst fear comes to past when he loses his son “Nemo”.  Most of the movie is about his journey to find Nemo, despite seemingly insurmountable obstacles in the life of a big ocean. The movie was made for children and for adults like me who like to find encouragement in most things. During this voyage, the father must overcome fear, keep the faith and trust others to help him. At various points in the story when things seem to be at their worst, his companion on the search for Nemo, keeps repeating the mantra, “Just keep Swimming”. When I ever I hear this phrase, I am reminded the importance of perseverance, resiliency and the need to keep moving forward. Things do get better when we keep putting one foot in front of another and “swim”.  Of course, I love happy endings and this movie concludes with a happy reunion but both father and son learn a lifetime of lessons on the journey, especially to “Just keep Swimming”.

We are HIS people

19 05 2011

Acknowledge that the LORD is God! He made us, and we are his. We are his people, the sheep of his pasture.   Psalm 100:3 (New Living
Translation)

We belong to God.   As our creator and our Father, we are His people. Knowing that I belong to God makes my heart glad. I am a part of His family and I am His child.  As my heavenly Father, He is concerned about me.  He is concerned about all of us, and each thing that we are facing. One scripture says that He knows the hair on our heads.  God knows more about us than we know about ourselves.  What a blessing to know that we belong to Him.  This knowing brings peace, it brings comfort and a reassurance that as His people, He loves us and is seeking to bless us as we serve Him.
