Carpe Diem

21 05 2014

Wtimee must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the one who sent us. The night is coming, and then no one can work. But while I am here in the world, I am the light of the world.
John 9:4-5 NLT

“Carpe Diem” is a Latin phrase that is often translated as a directive to ”Seize the Day.” It is a motivating term for me to maximize my time and effort during the opportunity that the day has to offer.

This passage in St. John is a response from Jesus to the Disciples about the urgency of our work here on earth. It gives important reminders about our existence:
• Our assignment is given to us by God. As our Creator, He knows our purpose and our God-given assignment that is consistent with His word.
• We must be focused and move with urgency to fulfill our tasks.
• We have limited time to accomplish our work.

We want to be focused in our thinking, in our attention and mindful of the opportunities to serve.  Approaching this day, I want to focus on advancing my God-given assignment on behalf of the ministry of Jesus Christ.

Top Condition

13 05 2014

walking feetI don’t know about you, but I’m running hard for the finish line. I’m giving it everything I’ve got. No sloppy living for me! I’m staying alert and in top condition. I’m not going to get caught napping, telling everyone else all about it and then missing out myself.
I Corinthians 9:26-27 MSG

As a child, I would listen to the Saints sing a song “I’m running for my life” during the devotional time in church. With a child’s imagination, I would often visualize people running desperately in a race. I think the fast tempo of the song plus the vivid words made the images come to mind.
Reading the passage for today, reminded me of our desire to achieve our best in our race for the Lord. Paul describes the purposeful journey that we have with Christ. We are striving to give our relationship with the Lord our best effort. We are earnestly seeking to do His will. We are staying alert for things that would have us to go off course or to meander needlessly down the wrong path. Just like an athlete we want to be in top condition and focused for the race. Prayer, reading God’s word and the Holy Spirit’s leading give us the guidance to stay on course and the best practices to reach our goal. A trained athlete finds a steady pace that strengthens their endurance and eliminates the wasted energy of carrying needless burdens and worry. We want to be able to go the distance in faith, traveling purposefully and strong in our stride toward the mark.

I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us. Philippians 3:14-15 NLT

Rooted in Love

30 04 2014

Tree of life

When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth. I pray that from His glorious, unlimited resources He will empower you with inner strength through His Spirit. Then Christ will make His home in your hearts as you trust in Him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.
Now all glory to God, who is able, through His mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. Glory to Him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever! Amen. Ephesians 4:14-21

We want our lives to be grounded in a firm knowledge of His love for us. The Creator of the earth and all things has a deep immeasurable love for you and me. It is mind-blowing to know and to experience His tremendous love for us. Unearned, grace and mercy has brought me to this place of knowledge of Him. I am so thankful for where I am today and where the Lord is leading ahead. It is a journey of faith moving into the fullness of life. He empowers our steps. He renews our strength daily. He provides what we need and we are never alone. His victories in our lives will never cease to amaze us. They are beyond what we could ask or think and we are thankful.

Pressing Onward

Philippians 3_14

I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:14

It is time to move forward in what God is calling us to do. He has put it on your heart. He has given you the vision of the road ahead and it is moving day. You may have unpacked all of your things, expecting an extended stay where you are but it is time to move onward. He is calling us to move forward in our purpose. We can’t wallow in procrastination. We should not be swept up in the emotion of past disappointment and the spirit of fear is not of God. It is time to move forward. You may have wanted a full itinerary of the journey but we are required to step out on faith. We are pressing onward in wisdom and listening for His leading. He is careful to direct our path to make the next steps forward.

Trust GOD from the bottom of your heart;
don’t try to figure out everything on your own.
Listen for GOD’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go;
he’s the one who will keep you on track. Proverbs 3:5-6 Msg.

Foundation Words

28 04 2014

Barcelona 2013 053

“Why are you so polite with me, always saying ‘Yes, sir,’ and ‘That’s right, sir,’ but never doing a thing I tell you? These words I speak to you are not mere additions to your life, homeowner improvements to your standard of living. They are foundation words, words to build a life on.
“If you work the words into your life, you are like a smart carpenter who dug deep and laid the foundation of his house on bedrock. When the river burst its banks and crashed against the house, nothing could shake it; it was built to last. But if you just use my words in Bible studies and don’t work them into your life, you are like a dumb carpenter who built a house but skipped the foundation. When the swollen river came crashing in, it collapsed like a house of cards. It was a total loss.” Luke 6:45-49 Msg

The Word of the Lord is life giving and a solid foundation for building our lives. The truth of His Word establishes the building blocks of love and redemption that is available through Christ. We can build our tents and houses on the blowing sands of our best thought and the ways of this world but they only provide fleeting moments of shelter. Jesus is the Rock. He is the solid foundation for building our lives. His Word and the Holy Spirit provide the eternal building blocks for us to use when we set the stage for our living. We are to work His Words into our lives. Not just reading His word but establishing them as a way of living.

For we are both God’s workers. And you are God’s field. You are God’s building.
Because of God’s grace to me, I have laid the foundation like an expert builder. Now others are building on it. But whoever is building on this foundation must be very careful. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one we already have—Jesus Christ.
Anyone who builds on that foundation may use a variety of materials—gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay, or straw. But on the judgment day, fire will reveal what kind of work each builder has done. The fire will show if a person’s work has any value. If the work survives, that builder will receive a reward. But if the work is burned up, the builder will suffer great loss. The builder will be saved, but like someone barely escaping through a wall of flames. I Corinthians 3:9-15 Msg

Clean Slate

I’ll forever wipe the slate clean of their sins. Hebrews 10:17 MSG

I need a fresh start. I need a turned page to begin again. I don’t need to wallow in past shortcomings. I don’t need to rehearse past mistakes or missed opportunities. I need to recognize where I am and focus on moving forward. I am so thankful that the Lord provides new mercies each morning. We can ask for forgiveness and He is faithful to respond to our repentance. He creates a clean slate for us. Our sins are wiped away and we start with a new canvass. What a blessing to start anew and to begin again. We can say thank you for the day ahead and a new beginning. Today is a chance to listen with an open heart about His will for our lives. We can start with a clean slate ready to heed His voice and to follow his lead into my future.

On Course

You’re blessed when you stay on course, walking steadily on the road revealed by GOD.
You’re blessed when you follow his directions, doing your best to find him. Psalms 119:1-2 MSG

I need a steady pace for my life that continues my path forward. Each day we want to make decisions that propel us closer to our purpose. It is so easy to succumb to procrastination, discouragement or weariness but they are heavy weights that we have to be careful to resist. Some of those feelings may have come to take up residence in our hearts and minds but it is a new morning and a new chance to renew our minds and our strength. With a thankful heart, we can seek Him for the what, how, who, when and where of our next steps. When we seek Him with a sincere heart, He is faithful to show us the path ahead. When we are committed to His will and His ways it makes the next steps clearer. It is time to seek Him. It is time to step out on faith. I am thankful for His leading that keeps us on course.

You’re blessed when you stay on course,
walking steadily on the road revealed by GOD.
You’re blessed when you follow his directions,
doing your best to find him.
That’s right—you don’t go off on your own;
you walk straight along the road he set.
You, GOD, prescribed the right way to live;
now you expect us to live it.
Oh, that my steps might be steady,
keeping to the course you set;
Then I’d never have any regrets
in comparing my life with your counsel.
I thank you for speaking straight from your heart;
I learn the pattern of your righteous ways.
I’m going to do what you tell me to do;
don’t ever walk off and leave me.
Psalms 119:1-8 MSG

Bountiful Earth

24 03 2014

Then God said, “Look! I have given you every seed-bearing plant throughout the earth and all the fruit trees for your food. Genesis 1:29

Our Heavenly Father created the earth with a variety of foods that bring nourishment to our bodies. Fruits and vegetables come in a cornucopia of colors and flavors. Leafy green, sunlit yellow, oranges, blues, and fire red are all God’s creations for the bountiful earth. These precious foods offer life giving properties that fuel our bodies for healthy living and strong life. We can be thankful that we know now more than ever, that wise choices in what we eat can have long lasting effects on our bodies and health. The right foods can lead us into health and healing. We are a nation that consumes too much of things that don’t bring health. Our trend in eating has brought about waves of heart disease, cancer and obesity that is wreaking havoc on our lives. Fatty and processed foods have us in a cycle of bad choices that we can break. I have found myself in the same rut but I am thankful that I am learning more about God’s foods – fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grains. What if the answer to health and strong living is right in front of us – eating a plant centered diet that feeds our minds and bodies, right from God’s bountiful earth.

Every Effort

14 03 2014

West Angeles COGICIn view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone. The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 1:5-8 NLT

First

11 03 2014

crocus snowSeek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. Matthew 6:33 NLT

Putting our Heavenly Father first is the key to a blessed life. Making God our first priority in our daily living – His Word, His teachings and His ways – is the compass we need each day. His way is higher ground that will keep us from things that don’t reflect His righteousness or His plan or purpose for our lives. Serving God and His Kingdom is our first priority. Pursuing Him and His will first, organizes our decisions to align with the wonderful journey He has planned for us. Putting Him first is a pathway for receiving everything that we need. We need His peace, His direction and His righteousness to abide in our hearts as we put Him first.

“So don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them, and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live as he wants you to. Matthew 6:32-33 TLB
