My Hope is in You

1 08 2012

Show me the right path, O Lord;

point out the road for me to follow.

Lead me by your truth and teach me,

for you are the God who saves me.

All day long I put my hope in you.

Psalm 25:4-5

Walking in faith requires strength and endurance. While the Lord has been faithful to provide direction along the journey, this season has been full of the unexpected. Much like a winding road, I have encountered curves, twists and even rest stops. The Lord met my need each step of the way. This experience has made me stronger and provided the liberty to move in peace.  I am thankful to God that we can put our hope, our trust and faith in Him. In a place of hope, we can expect God’s best on behalf of His children. A strong trust gives us the confidence and boldness to move when and where He directs. Our faith in God makes our journey possible. My Hope today is that God will do exceedingly, abundantly above and beyond all that we can ask or think

Think of His Goodness

31 07 2012

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lordforever.

Psalm 23:5-6

My heart is full this morning thinking about God’s goodness. Just thinking about God’s

mercy and His unconditional love for me gives me such joy and a heart of gratitude. Since I started this journey in relationship with the Father through His son Jesus Christ, my life has been truly blessed. Even when I have fallen short of my best for Him, He has shown me mercy in ways that I could not imagine. At times, I thought I had “problems” but everything is relative. He has turned those problems into stepping stones of my faith. I am thankful.

I have a blessed life. My family is blessed and it is all due to His goodness and mercy toward me. Today, I want to dwell on His eternal blessings on my life and keep His joy in my heart and His praises on my lips.

Recognizing Him

30 07 2012

A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. When they had rowed about three or three and a half miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were frightened. But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.” John 6:18-20

We thank God for His leading in our lives. Making big decisions is never easy but when we need His guidance, He is faithful to direct our path. Sometimes our journey takes us into unchartered waters, outside of our comfort zone and out of our preconceived notions about how things will happen. I imagine that when the disciples were crossing the turbulent waters, they did not think that they would see Jesus walking on top of the waves.   We may be asking ourselves, “Is this you Jesus?” in the middle of the situation that we are facing today. Even though I have not experienced a burning bush or a booming voice from heaven, I believe that God provides tools for direction. I am thankful that we can first ask for guidance in prayer. Then listen for His voice. His voice may be an urging through the Holy Spirit to move in a certain way. We may also experience God-given ideas that support next steps. We may even receive confirmation from the Saints about what the next steps may look like.   One ultimate confirmation is that it should be consistent with God’s Word. He leads us into paths of righteousness and not based on our own level of thinking. When we know it’s Him or the Great I am, we can step out of the boat with confidence and faith remembering to keep our eyes and ears on Him.

Keep Steppin’

27 07 2012

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6

Moving forward requires us to put one foot in front of another. Our first steps may be small ones but if we can achieve some consistency in walking with Lord as our lead, we will make progress forward. For some of us, we may be experiencing fear that may have us frozen in our current state. Others may have so much emotional baggage that we are weighted down and moving forward takes more energy than we can muster. Having a distorted self-image that is seen through the lens of self-doubt, low-self-esteem and lack of confidence in our talents and abilities can make the initial step seemingly impossible.

But I am so thankful for God’s mercy, His love and His grace. Our Heavenly Father, created us with everything we need to fulfill His Holy purpose for our lives. I have prayed that God would show me what He sees when He looks at me. This is the most powerful lens we can have. He sees the beauty, the talents, gifts and abilities that He has instilled in each of us. He also sees the areas where we may have fallen short but our God is faithful to forgive when we ask to be forgiven. He even sees areas in our lives where need to mature and develop in our walk with Him. Our journey continues when we put our trust in Him and stand on His word for guidance. He is faithful to hear our prayer and allow us to move forward along our path.

Finding Your Stride

26 07 2012

Therefore then, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses [who have borne testimony to the Truth], let us strip off and throw aside every encumbrance (unnecessary weight) and that sin which so readily (deftly and cleverly) clings to and entangles us, and let us run with patient endurance and steady and active persistence the appointed course of the race that is set before us,

Looking away [from all that will distract] to Jesus, Who is the Leader and the Source of our faith [giving the first incentive for our belief] and is also its Finisher [bringing it to maturity and perfection]. He, for the joy [of obtaining the prize] that was set before Him, endured the cross, despising and ignoring the shame, and is now seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Just think of Him Who endured from sinners such grievous opposition and bitter hostility against Himself [reckon up and consider it all in comparison with your trials], so that you may not grow weary or exhausted, losing heart and relaxing and fainting in your minds. Hebrews 12:1-3

I don’t like to run.  I was never really fast and distance running never appealed to me on any level.  Despite this fact, I have always admired individuals who could do it.  One of my friends in High School was on the track team.  Running is in his blood.  To this day, he posts his times on online some 30 years later.  I imagine that this keeps him both fit and happy.

Lately, I have been trying to find a comfortable marathon pace for my life.  It seems that for a good period I was busy, busy, busy.  All my time was accounted for and sometimes hours that should have been set aside for sleep and exercise, just were absorbed with more busy work.  Even though I saw myself moving forward during this period, it turns out most of it was an exercise of running in circles.  Not really making progress on the things that matter most.  God’s Word compels us to run with endurance keeping Jesus as our focus.  Things that cause us to sin or to do things contrary to His word and will for our lives should be dropped.  These are the things that weigh us down and hinder us from living the life God has available to us.  Looking to Him gives us focus, gives us direction and helps us to find the stride that will help us to endure until we cross the finish line.

All these many people who have had faith in God are around us like a cloud. Let us put everything out of our lives that keeps us from doing what we should. Let us keep running in the race that God has planned for us. Let us keep looking to Jesus. Our faith comes from Him and He is the One Who makes it perfect. He did not give up when He had to suffer shame and die on a cross. He knew of the joy that would be His later. Now He is sitting at the right side of God.  Sinful men spoke words of hate against Christ. He was willing to take such shame from sinners. Think of this so you will not get tired and give up.  Hebrews 12:1-3 NLV

Eyes on the Prize

25 07 2012

I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.  Philippians 3:14

A look of determination and focus is telling. I have seen it in the eyes of a runner before a race. I have also seen it in a picture on the faces of African-American women fighting for a Head Start program for their children in rural Mississippi in the 1960’s. They seem to know it was going to take a combination of determination, focus and hard work to accomplish the task. They seem to know that they were up against difficult odds in a community where their lives and the lives of their children were not valued but still they worked. And despite the odds, the lack of funds and the lack of history of success with fighting against the system, the look was on each of their faces. Their look and their determination is an inspiration to me. Sometimes we sit in a place of complacency when we have untold power through the Holy Spirit. The scripture says that we are more than conquerors but often we sit in a mental place of defeat. We often see injustices and choose to say nothing about it. But we are the light of the world.

Today, I am asking God for the direction, the strength and the boldness to do what He is calling us to do on behalf of His people. We will continue to press toward the mark and we are not turning back.

I’m not saying that I have this all together, that I have it made. But I am well on my way, reaching out for Christ, who has so wondrously reached out for me. Friends, don’t get me wrong: By no means do I count myself an expert in all of this, but I’ve got my eye on the goal, where God is beckoning us onward-to Jesus. I’m off and running, and I’m not turning back. Philippians 3:14

Content

24 07 2012

How I praise the Lord that you are concerned about me again. I know you have always been concerned for me, but you didn’t have the chance to help me. Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little.  For, I can do everything through Christ who gives me strength.  Philippians 4:10-13 NLT

Content (adjective) satisfied with what one is or has; not wanting more or anything else.

Most people strive to find contentment with what they have or who they are by working to get more of what they think will make them happy. It often involves more money, more assets or more power or influence over others. Sadly, it may be a deep desire for both. We see examples in the media daily of people who have reached “success” by society’s standard and have a disturbing lack of peace and contentment.

Paul describes a contentment that comes from within. It doesn’t matter where he is or what he has or doesn’t have, he has learned to be satisfied. It seems rare to find this trait in people today. There seems to be an insatiable appetite for more things, more attention and more power in this world. Paul shares with us two keys: 1) that He learned this behavior and 2) that his relationship with Christ empowers with the strength to do all things. I imagine that Paul’s journey allowed him to experience things where he arrived at a deep knowing in his heart and mind that the Lord ordered his steps. And each step of the journey was empowered with strength and the provision to make it to where God was leading. We can be thankful today that this level of contentment is available to each of us today. We can arrive there, at any point along our journey, knowing that our Heavenly Father is faithful to each of His promises.

I’m glad in God, far happier than you would ever guess-happy that you’re again showing such strong concern for me. Not that you ever quit praying and thinking about me. You just had no chance to show it. Actually, I don’t have a sense of needing anything personally. I’ve learned by now to be quite content whatever my circumstances. I’m just as happy with little as with much, with much as with little. I’ve found the recipe for being happy whether full or hungry, hands full or hands empty. Whatever I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything in the One who makes me who I am. I don’t mean that your help didn’t mean a lot to me-it did. It was a beautiful thing that you came alongside me in my troubles. Philippians 4:10-13 (Message)

A Plan in the Middle

23 07 2012

Six stone water jars were there. Each one held about one-half barrel of water. These water jars were used in the Jewish worship of washing.  Jesus said to the helpers, “Fill the jars with water.” They filled them to the top.

Then He said, “Take some out and give it to the head man who is caring for the people.” They took some to him. The head man tasted the water that had become wine. He did not know where it came from but the helpers who took it to him knew. He called the man who had just been married. The head man said to him, “Everyone puts out his best wine first. After people have had much to drink, he puts out the wine that is not so good. You have kept the good wine until now!”   John 2:1-10

You may be in the middle like me.  It is a time where we are standing on God’s Word for Peace, Patience and Protection.  While all the while providing praise to our Father who is so worthy. So as we continue to journey, we do have some specific things we can do – pray, stay in God’s presence as we follow His guidance.

I am so thankful for the Word ministry and the men and women who share God’s Word with us through sermons.  I experienced a blessing this week with a powerful message, where we were reminded to do whatever the Lord says.  This requires us to first ask God for direction and to listen closely to what He is asking us to do.  He may be instructing us to do something that is different than we ever imagined.  But just as Jesus performed a miracle turning the pots of water into wine that is what He is able to do with the situations in our lives.  Our God is great and has good plans in mind for each of us.  In the middle, we can count on God’s guidance and the victory as we seek to do His will.

Protection in the Middle

19 07 2012

I love you, Lord; you are my strength.

The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior;  my God is my rock, in whom I find protection.

He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety.

I called on the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and he saved me from my enemies.

Psalm 18:1-3

I am so thankful for God’s protection of our mind, body and spirit. As a child, I remember testimony service at church would include references to God’s protection for dangers seen and unseen.  As a young person I would imagine the people of God having to maneuver through life through a labyrinth of calamity to make it through the week.  On one level this was an immature notion on my part, but on another level I feel the depiction was quite accurate.

We face so many things where God’s protection surrounds us physically, mentally and spiritually. I am thankful for His protection as we go to and fro in our daily living. He can keep our minds in the middle of disasters and confusion.   While providing perfect peace each step of the way. What a blessing that He keeps us safe from dangers seen and unseen.

Jesus, Be a fence all around me every day.

Jesus, I want you to protect me as I travel along the way.

Praise in the Middle

17 07 2012

I will praise the Lord at all times.

I will constantly speak his praises.

I will boast only in the Lord; let all who are helpless take heart.

Come, let us tell of the Lord’s greatness; let us exalt his name together.

Psalm 34:1-3

Our God is Great and well-deserving of our continuous praise. I find my best days are when I start and finish the day with the Lord’s goodness on my heart and mind. With a song in my heart about His faithfulness, His greatness and His love for me, it is difficult to let discouragement in my day. Some days may be more difficult than others but when we surround ourselves with His word, His praises on our lips, His songs of praise, He is faithful to encourage our hearts. This is true even in the middle of great challenges. He is faithful to deliver us of fear and to provide the peace we need for blessed living. Bless His Holy Name.
