Faith Building

17 06 2011

So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ.   Romans 10:17

Some seasons in our lives are intense.  It requires a concerted effort to stay focused on our faith and ignore the many distractions that exist  around us.  The news reports, the doctors test results and maybe our bank statements may be contrary to each of our prayers.  The Word of God provides direction about faith and how to build it along our journey.

We know that Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see”  (Hebrews 11:1)

We know that And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.”  (Hebrews 11:6)

The passage from Romans describes how our faith comes from hearing the Word of God.  And the word for “hearing” used in this scripture reflects hearing in a continuous, repetitive sense.  Our faith is built by hearing over and over again about Jesus, our Savior, our Healer, our  provider, our deliver and our comforter.  It builds our faith to hear over and over again that Jesus loves us and is concerned about us. Hearing these truths repetitively through reading God’s Word, hearing the testimonies of believers, surrounding ourselves with songs of encouragement, all help to make us stronger. As we build our faith muscles, we should also think about how to reduce the distractions that are contrary to our faith including the negative people and other destructive influences in our lives. We want to continue to grow and become stronger in our belief in God and our relationship with Jesus Christ.

Higher Ground

16 06 2011

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.  Philippians 4:8

I recently heard someone refer to our collective personal thoughts on a daily basis as our “thought life”. It is an interesting term to describe what and how we think about things. For most of us, we spend a great amount of time pondering about feelings, situations, emotions, problem solving or simply achieving understanding. This passage describes the importance of maintaining our focus on things that meet a high standard of truth, honor and excellence. Committing our focus and our “thought life” on this higher ground creates a foundation for us to clearly see God in our lives. Higher thoughts translate into higher conversations with others, better decisions and a more blessed journey with the Lord. I am thankful to God for the opportunity and His Word that guides us to move to Higher Ground.

Singing HIS Praises

15 06 2011

The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and I am helped. My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to him in song. Psalm 28:7

I enjoy singing but I am at best a shower singer. So at church, I do my best to at least achieve the “joyful noise” category. And even though my pitch and knowledge of the words is a little sketchy, I do try to sing unto the Lord with gladness. I have found that no matter how I am feeling, if I have a song in my heart the Holy Spirit is gracious to provide an uplifting of my heart and mind. You can sing only so many verses of “I love you Jesus” or “I am a friend of God” before you begin to reflect on God’s goodness in our lives. So as I approach another day, I will endeavor to keep a song in my heart and His praises on my lips for the joy of the Lord is my strength.

Good Hope

14 06 2011

God our Father loved us and by his kindness gave us everlasting encouragement and good hope. Together with our Lord Jesus Christ, may he encourage and strengthen you to do and say everything that is good.   I Thessalonians 2:16 – 17 God’s (Word Translation)

As children of God, we can approach each day with good hope. We have so many things to be thankful for in our lives – grace, mercy and God’s everlasting encouragement. As we travel on life’s journey, we can walk with confidence that God loves us, there is a divine purpose for our lives and that our Father is available to help us along the way.

Dear Father-

I am encouraged to serve You and to
do Your will in my life. I have hope in my heart as I continue on my journey.
You are God our Father and I thank You for Your grace and love for me. I am so
thankful for the blessings of peace, joy and contentment along the way. I am
encouraged with each step to walk with You. Thank You for the blessing of the
journey. I am encouraged.

Amen

The Work of His Hands

11 06 2011

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. Psalm 19 1- 2

Evidence of God’s creativity is all around us.  It’s reflective in so many ways within the precious earth that we live.  In things big and small we can see the marvelous work of our sovereign God.  In the last twenty-four hours, I have witnessed the beautiful display of God’s hands – plants and animals, the large roar of the waves of the ocean and the faithfulness of the sunrise.  Many of these things we take for granted, leading our busy lives.  Taking the time to witness His handiwork is a blessing.  To know that the same God who made the earth, made each of us is remarkable to me.  What a marvelous Artist and Craftsman – God is in our lives.

Bright Lights

8 06 2011

Do everything without complaining and arguing, so that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people. Hold firmly to the word of life; then, on the day of Christ’s return, I will be proud that I did not run the race in vain and that my work was not useless.    Philippians 2:14 – 16  (New Living Translation)

“This Little Light of Mine” is a timeless children’s favorite.  The song has several familiar verses reminding us about the importance of letting our light shine.  It is a vital message for the young and the old in today’s dark world.  Just imagine if everyone were committed to being a light in their homes, work and relationships.  What if we used our words to build people up, being a positive influence and eliminated complaining?  Just as natural sunlight penetrates the darkness of night when the sunrises, it would transform the world we know.

Reminder – Renewal

7 06 2011

He renews my strength.  Psalm 23:3a (New Living Translation)

God is so merciful to allow us to experience life in manageable doses. The 24 hours in a day, seven days in a week and the changing of the season, each allow us to see the beginning and the end of time spans in our lives.  At times, we experience seasons of joy and others seem to burden our hearts.  The loss of loved ones, the tragedy of communities and the general elevated stress that seems to come with living in this day are challenges to building our faith.

Rest and renewal are essential for our survival. I am so grateful for the refreshed supply of mercies that come with the new day. God renews our strength. He restores our soul.

Turn it over to HIM

6 06 2011

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.  I Peter 5:7

Our heavenly Father is concerned about us. It is amazing to me that our awesome God has intimate knowledge about my life. God knows first-hand about my concerns, my problems and even the desires of my heart. Whatever we are facing today – I am so thankful that we can take it to Him and leave it in His hands.

Dear Father-

I am so thankful that You care for me. When I think about the greatness of the universe, I appreciate the attention You give to my life. You are a mighty God and it is a privilege that with every difficulty that You are there for me. No matter how big or small the problem, You are only a prayer away, ready to listen and to help. I appreciate Your complete love and concern for me. We give You honor and glory for this blessing. I thank You for You care for me.

Amen

A Reminder – Speak Life

3 06 2011

The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.  Proverbs 18:21

What we say and think are powerful influences in our lives.  Every day we have to choose whether to say what we think or what God says about the situations in our lives.  Our thoughts are often limited by our human understanding but genuine revelation comes from God. My pastor recently asked what the world would be like if God’s people were consistently and constantly speaking God’s words.  What an outpouring of love, concern,  peace and hope would be evident throughout the world.  Speak His words and speak life.

Wherever You Go

2 06 2011

Remember that I have commanded you to be determined and confident! Do not be afraid or discouraged, for I, the Lord your God, am  with you wherever you go.  Joshua 1:9  (Good News Translation)

Living in today’s world, we will experience uncertainty and change.  I imagine when Joshua was called to lead after the death of Moses that He may have had some questions in his heart about how he should proceed. This passage is one of several commandments and promises Joshua receives to assure his success.  He is reminded of the importance of meditating and following God’s Word, while staying on the path of His leading. God also commands Joshua at least three times to be “Strong and Very Courageous” or in this translation “Determined and Confident”.  It is guidance that we all can use in our daily walk in the Lord. This is not the time to be faint-hearted or weary. As we follow God’s leading, we can walk confidently and be assured that our Heavenly Father will be with us every step of the way.
