Peace in the Middle

16 07 2012

And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?  And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? Mark 4:38-40

One of my favorite storytellers is Bailey White. She is a gifted Southern writer who speaks with a raspy distinctive voice. She told a story about living with her mother during a warm summer night in Georgia. Her mother often opted to sleep out of the porch during these hot nights to keep cool. This particular night while Bailey was sleeping she realized that a thunderstorm had arrived complete with high winds, lightening and rain. She jumped into action knowing that her mother had planned to sleep outside. When she reached the porch door she saw the storm’s fury with rain and wind. And then she saw her mother, who was lying motionless on the couch on the porch. She called her name as she feared that her mother was frozen in fear and unable to move in the midst of the high winds. As she approached her mother, she heard a familiar but perplexing sound, her mother’s snore. Her mother was not gripped with fear; instead, was sound asleep, complete with snoring, in the middle of the storm. She awakened her mother to let her know about the storm. At that point, the Mother reassured her daughter that it was just a storm that would pass.

It was a powerful reminder of the ability to be confident and peaceful even during the natural and figurative storms of our lives. No doubt her mother’s decades of living had nurtured her faith to realize that our lives have cycles of storms that both come and go. We can choose to be fearful or we can select a path of peace that is rooted in our firm belief that our Father is still control and that he will never leave us nor forsake us. The familiar passage of scripture tells a similar story of the disciples crossing the lake to the other side when a storm arises that seems to threaten their lives. We have heard before about how the disciples awaken Jesus who was sound asleep in the bottom of the ship. He awakens and commands the waves to be still but also asks the Disciples about their faith. It is a compelling story about the ability to have peace, rest and faith during a storm. Whatever we are facing today, we can stand in faith that our God is in control, providing protection and grace to allow us to reach our destination safely.

Standing Still

12 07 2012

“Be still, and know that I am God!

I will be honored by every nation.

I will be honored throughout the world.”

 Psalm 46:10

Creating stillness in your life requires some effort. The world is intent on movement, speed and at a minimum a lot of busyness. All kinds of commitments pull on our time, our resources and our thinking. I imagine a place of stillness as a space where we are focused yet relaxed in the current moment of quietness. It is quiet space where your body and mind are at a state of rest, having full confidence in the God we serve. This is a place of peace, a place of trust and faith in our Father.

Quédense quietos, reconozcan que yo soy Dios.
¡Yo seré exaltado entre las naciones!
¡Yo seré enaltecido en la tierra!

Putting Him First

10 07 2012

Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. Matthew 6:33 NLT

Considering next steps can be difficult. Setting the correct priorities can create the space for a fruitful decision. The scripture for me to day is about our command to put God first in our lives. It is hard to imagine my life without God providing the perfect leading and guidance through the Holy Spirit. We sometimes become anxious and worry about how our situations will turn out. It is comforting to know that God loves me, that He has created a pathway for me into my destiny. My responsibility is to put His will for my life first. Our Father is faithful to allow everything else to fall into a place of blessing once we have made the commitment for our lives going forward.

At all Times

3 07 2012

I will praise the Lord at all times. I will constantly speak his praises.

I will boast only in the Lord; let all who are helpless take heart.

Come, let us tell of the Lord’s greatness; let us exalt his name together.

I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me. He freed me from all my fears.

Those who look to him for help will be radiant with joy; no shadow of shame will darken their faces.

In my desperation I prayed, and the Lord listened; he saved me from all my troubles.

For the angel of the Lord is a guard; he surrounds and defends all who fear him.  Psalms 34:1-7

God has been good to me. When I think about His mercy and His love that He has shown to me, it brings tears to my eyes. My Heavenly Father has continued to show compassion toward the matters of my heart. He continues to provide peace, protection and motivation to move toward higher ground even though I don’t deserve it. I thank God for the ultimate blessing of relationship that compels me toward His will and not my own. In His will I can find peace and love. In His will I can work on the nooks and crannies of my life that need work toward better living. In His will I can continue to nurture trust and faith that He will never leave me nor forsake me. In this place, He will provide peace and protection, free from fear and the anxiety that this world has to offer. I am thankful to God and my savior Jesus for these blessings. I will bless the Lord at all times.

His Joy and My Strength

2 07 2012

…And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”  Nehemiah 8:10b

The Joy of the Lord is our strength.   I feel so blessed that we can look to our heavenly Father each day for strength. Looking to Him, seeking Him and pressing our way to be closer to Him can provide a fresh wind when we need it. I believe that we live in a time where strength and endurance are needed. Our lives appear to be in a marathon where we need to continue to move at a steady, consistent pace that allows us to continue to move toward our purpose. Our God is faithful to meet our needs and provide a source of peace and happiness each step of the way.

I am With You

29 06 2012

But now the LORD says: Be strong, Zerubbabel. Be strong, Jeshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people still left in the land. And now get to work, for I am with you, says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies. My Spirit remains among you, just as I promised when you came out of Egypt. So do not be afraid.  Haggai 2:4-5

We are so thankful for a Faithful Father who is always with us. We may wonder how we are going to make it through with the work He has assigned to our hands. We may not know how we will have the strength to continue when times are tough. Our passage today is reminder of God’s promises to us through the Prophet Haggai. He encourages God’s servants to be strong and to get to work. God is with us. Although our instincts may be to become weary and fearful but our God is a great and He is with us every step of the way.

But now don’t be discouraged, any of you. Do the work, for I am with you  when you came out of Egypt, I promised that I would always be with you. I am still with you, so do not be afraid.  Haggai 2:4-5

Show Yourself Strong

28 06 2012

For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. 2 Chronicles 16:9 a

We serve a mighty God who loves us.  His power and mercy is evident in the grace that is bestowed on us each day.  As we approach our walk with Him, we may wonder how He is moving on our behalf.  We may not see how the individual events in our lives work together but our Heavenly Father has the master plan.  This is the same God that spoke the world into existence. What power, what might and how gracious that God brought each of us into this world for this time and this place.  I am thankful to God for the countless blessings that allow my today and tomorrows.  I am thankful that God has already worked things out on our behalf and that we can honor our Father with our love and our service.  He is showing Himself strong each day.

Getting a Life

27 06 2012

The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.  John 10:10

Jesus came that we might have abundant life. My vision of this life is full of peace, love, joy and contentment. Amazingly it does not include fear, anxiety and hate that seem so commonplace today. I have reached a time in my life where discovering meaningful ways to spend my time and energy are at the forefront of my mind. I have previously walked in ambiguity but I believe those days are behind me. I am excited about the road ahead because I believe our Father is faithful to provide the clarity and direction for moving forward. He can show us how to move into our purpose, providing the gifts and resources to bring it to pass. It’s a journey into the satisfying life He intends for each of us.

On Purpose

26 06 2012

Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in  wisdom.  Psalm 90:12

During childhood, the days we have ahead seem as infinite as the leaves on a tall oak tree. Hopefully, this time is spent learning, developing and maturing into the individuals God crafted us to be. As we get older we begin to realize how God’s gift of another day is precious. For some of us it takes the experience of aging, illness or even the loss of a loved one to bring the value of our time on Earth into focus.

Our society is full of distraction that keeps us away from things that bring meaning to our lives. We may drift from one thing to another without real direction or authority of over our daily living. It takes a conscious effort on our part for us to live according to God’s individual purpose and calling. While it is easy to allow things that simply don’t matter to consume our time and resources, we can make the most of the opportunities God gives to us. We can live with a grateful heart. We can show love in our words and actions.   We can demonstrate forgiveness and mercy. We can honor the gift of each day living on purpose.

Blessed

31 05 2012

And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19

We receive so many blessings each day.  The blessing of life, health and strength are precious gifts.  The added promise of peace and joy in our minds and soul, as we focus on God is a gift beyond measure.  It is amazing to me to know that the Lord can provide peace and joy even when circumstances in our personal lives can be full of uncertainty. We can have faith that whatever arises today that God can provide guidance, comfort and healing.  We pray that God will use our blessed life for His glory and in service to His people.
